Immersive Gatsby | Review

Welcome back to the roaring twenties! Jay Gatsby invites you to one of his infamous parties. The champagne flows and as the drama unfolds the man himself will be the perfect host. As invites go, this is the hottest ticket in town. A hedonistic world of red hot rhythms, bootleg liquor and pure jazz age self-indulgence awaits. Dress to the nines and immerse yourself in this heart racing adaption of F Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal tale.

If you are looking for theatre where you really feel part of the action, Immersive Gatsby is the show to pick.  This unassuming venue in Soho, central London is transformed into the iconic 1920’s New York mansion in this immersive production of the classic book, The Great Gatsby.

While some of the intricacies of the famous storyline can be lost here as you catch scenes from the book in between wild dance parties and cocktails from the bar the heart of the performance remains in place.  The key to this show is to make the most of it, go along with anything the characters ask of you and lose yourself in the performance and enjoy the party!  Plenty of the audience dress up in full 1920’s garb for this event so if you go the whole hog you won’t stand out, you’ll just be part of the show!  There’re are plenty of hidden scenes and highly decorated sets you will miss if you turn down a performer’s request to help them with a plot point or two…

The costuming is particularly excellent and is as detailed and extravagant as a 1920’s party at Gatsby’s house would require.  If you get a chance to go into the dressing room scene, take it!  The costumes lining the walls here are truly stunning.

The characters are performed well throughout and the audience finds out just how well when they take the opportunity to ad-lib with the performers about the show as it unfolds.  Maybe they approach you to ask what you think of the way their partner is acting, or maybe you get in there first and ask them their thoughts in a scene.  The cast’s ability to think on their feet and live through these characters is really remarkable.
