Frozen The Musical at Theatre Royal Drury Lane

When Queen Elsa’s hidden powers plunge the land of Arendelle into an eternal winter, her sister Anna sets out to find her and save the kingdom before it’s too late. But as the storm rages on, both sisters must learn that only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart.

Frozen the Musical is a great example of how to make an all-ages show a success and bring the magic to life.  Sure it’s primarily aimed at the young kids who adored the film but there’s something for everything to enjoy in this musical hit.  For the most part, the storyline follows the film that children across the world are so familiar with but the added songs delve deeper into the characters and story to build upon the characters and the princess’s lives before their parents passed away.

The set, props and costumes in this show are all some of the best you will see in the West End.  The set combines huge set pieces with surprising theatrical effects that are a must-see for them alone, they are some of the best I’ve seen on stage.  The sets are all incredibly detailed and the fairytale-like styling combined with the audio-visual effects makes it really feel like you are witnessing magic, even for the adults in the audience.  The movement direction and choreography are similarly flawless with not a wrong step among the cast who are all fantastic.

It’s common in shows such as this to add some element of puppetry to bring fantastical characters or animals to life and it is done so here with great effect, especially in the character of Olaf which is excellently performed by Craig Gallivan bringing the characters signature cheeky humour and child-like innocence.

I’ve seen a lot of theatre in the last few years so it can be hard for me to switch off the critic in my head, but this is one of the few shows that totally swept me away and allowed me to sit back and enjoy the magic.  There really is something for everyone in this delightful, funny and joyous show.  Frozen the Musical is currently booking until the 15th of October, tickets start from £25 from the London Box Office Website.
