Portugal vs Spain Residence by Investment: Find Your Best Fit

Investing in a residence permit in Europe is an attractive option for many individuals looking to live in a stable, welcoming environment with access to a high standard of living. Among the most popular countries for such investments are Portugal and Spain. Both offer residency programs designed for investors, but the conditions and benefits differ.

Albert Ioffe, Legal and Compliance Officer at Immigrant Invest, compares Spain and Portugal Golden Visa, providing investors with the information they need to decide which program best suits their goals.

What is Residence in Portugal for Investors?

Residence in Portugal for investors primarily refers to the Golden Visa program. It is aimed at foreign nationals who make qualifying investments in the country. This visa grants investors the right to live, work, and travel freely within the Schengen Area, which includes most European countries.

The Golden Visa program in Portugal has been particularly appealing due to its relatively straightforward requirements and the benefits it offers, such as the possibility of acquiring citizenship after five years.

Portugal’s residency by investment program is known for its flexibility. Investors can choose from a range of investment options, including real estate, business ventures, or capital transfers. The minimum investment requirement for the Golden Visa varies depending on the type of investment and location within the country. As a result, this program is considered one of the more attractive residency options in Europe.

What is Residence in Spain for Investors?

Residence in Spain referred to a similar program known as the Spanish Golden Visa. It is no longer available. Like Portugal’s program, it provided residency to investors who made a significant investment in the country. However, the types of qualifying investments in Spain were more focused on real estate and business projects, with options such as purchasing property, investing in business, or depositing a certain amount of money in a Spanish bank account.

The Spanish residency program also allowed investors to live in Spain and travel within the Schengen Area. While the requirements were similar to Portugal’s, Spain’s program tended to be slightly stricter in terms of physical presence, with investors needing to spend more time in the country to maintain their residency status.

Portugal Golden Visa Requirements

To qualify for Portugal’s Golden Visa, investors must meet one of the following investment criteria:

  • investing a minimum of €500,000 in investment funds;
  • contributing €250,000 to cultural or heritage preservation;
  • investing at least €500,000 in scientific research;
  • business investments of €500,000, creating at least 5 jobs;
  • opening a company and creating at least 10 jobs.

Additional conditions include maintaining the investment for a minimum period of five years and fulfilling a requirement of staying in Portugal for at least seven days in the first year and 14 days in subsequent two-year periods.

How to Apply for Portugal Residence by Investment

The application process for the Portuguese Golden Visa is relatively simple and involves several steps:

  1. Choose an investment type. The first step is to choose the investment option that best suits the investor’s goals, such as fund units purchase or job creation.

  2. Gather necessary documents. Investors must provide various documents, including a passport, proof of legal residence, criminal background check, proof of investment, and health insurance.

  3. Submit the application. Applications are submitted through the AIMA, Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum of Portugal. Once submitted, it is reviewed by the authorities.

  4. Approval and residence permit. If approved, the investor will be granted a temporary residence permit, which is valid for two years. After two years, the permit can be renewed for an additional two years, eventually leading to permanent residency or citizenship eligibility after five years.

Conclusion

Both Portugal and Spain offer solid residency programs for investors, but the choice between them depends largely on an investor’s priorities.

Portugal’s program is seen as more flexible and accessible with lower investment thresholds, while Spain offers the allure of a larger market and more established infrastructure but requires a greater commitment in terms of time spent in the country.

Understanding the requirements and weighing the benefits of each country will help investors make the best decision for their future.
