Your Physical Activity Improves Mental Health

July 21, 2022

Mental health affects the way we think, talk, and cope. It affects all of our beings, and that is why really important to check on yourself and your loved ones here and there. Meeting deadlines, having big responsibilities, not facing your emotions and traumas, and being surrounded by a toxic environment can consume your mental health. We have to be grateful that nowadays, we actually know how to take care of ourselves and we have come a long way to only understand that we have to break the cycle that was built consciously or unconsciously generations ago.

Many studies have shown that doing physical activity can improve our mental health. Trying new things and breaking our daily routine, will release dopamine (the feel-good chemical). Learning new skills can also boost self-confidence, which that will help our well-being. There are many different things you can do to improve your well-being, including:

Reflecting Positivity

Mental health actuates the way we handle stress, how we make choices and how we connect with other beings, so basically we should all put our mental health first. No excuses. Improving our mental health should be everyone’s priority, regardless of age. When we hear the word “positivity”, our brain immediately thinks of something always happy and vibrant. But balancing your thoughts; good or bad, accepting things as they are, and having no expectations, is positivity. Whatever happens during the day, no matter how big it is, accept it and move on. Try to learn from the situation. Removing ourselves from the victim’s mood and not trying to blame ourselves or others for a certain thing, but just accepting that experience and asking ourselves “What can I learn from this?’’, that my friend, is positivity. Positivity is being practical in life.

Physical activities

Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood and aging. It starts from the way we talk and treat ourselves, to how we talk and treat others, what we eat, what we do in our free time, following our daily routines, what movies or tv shows we watch, what kind of music we listen to, every single thing can shape our mental health.

Physical activities release cortisol which helps us manage stress. Exercising is not only to lose weight and build muscles but is also a very powerful tool to use to protect your mental health. Regular exercise can have a positive impact on releasing stress, improving your memory, sleeping better, and boosting your mood, which are all key factors of well-being because exercise affects our brains directly. For those of us who hate running, frankly, there are a lot of other types of exercises that can improve our mental health.

Exercising should feel like having fun, after all.
– Yoga can ease depression as it teaches us mindful breathing and deep focus.
– Gym exercises or aerobics also improve our mental health and we end up feeling very good about ourselves and very energized, especially if we are the type of people who like to be in control.
– Cycling is also a great exercise that helps you socialize and enjoy beautiful scenery. If you don’t have a bike yet (or need a new one), shop here.
– When we put goals in exercises, such as doing 100 squats, or 15 reps of dumbells, rope skipping, boxing, etc we feel very good about ourselves when we finish those sets and that boosts our self–esteem. Feeling good about yourself after you finish exercising is a job well done.

Conclusion

Physical activities have a huge impact on our well-being, even if it’s just 10 minutes per day. Studies show that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression as effectively as antidepressant medication. Practicing gratitude, staying positive, taking care of your physical health, and connecting with others, can improve your mental health. Even if intense exercise is not for you, thankfully there are a lot of other relaxation techniques that will help you. It’s crucially important to take time every day for yourself and your mental health, even if that means taking a hot bath before sleep or spending time with your loved ones. Even if you don’t feel like doing all this stuff for your mental health, enjoying the smallest things in your life can help in your well-being. You know what’s good for you.
