For a Palestinian at Camden People's Theatre

Bilal has always been obsessed with love stories. Here he tells you his favourite: the true story of Palestinian translator Wa’el Zuaiter. Join Bilal as he ventures through the orange groves of Jaffa, Rome’s piazzas, and the Duty-Free aisles of Luton Airport, piecing together this untold story, and asking what it means to be a Palestinian in the West.

Telling the important story of a Palestinian/British young man dealing with his relationship with his cultural and family history through the means of storytelling and his discovery of a Wa’el Zuaiter’s life story; For a Palestinian allows actor Bilal Hasna to bring this to life whilst playing many characters, and speaking from his own heart.

Highlighting the balance between living in the West and the importance of keeping in touch with your cultural heritage and the internal conflict this can create are key themes here. Bilal works as a narrator, explaining how he discovered Wa’el Zuaiter who in turn was an amazing storyteller. It examines just what makes us human, is it this need and importance we put on storytelling through the generations and the way we communicate these stories through the generations?

The show is well performed by Bilal and the movement direction is great to watch. There are moments of powerful energy surging through the performance, it’s a show full of personality, emotions and dramatic tension. The raw moments of realness really make this show memorable and powerful to the audience.
