The Great British Bake Off Musical at the Noël Coward Theatre

Walking past this theatre I heard many comments from passing tourists looking up at the flashing lights around the signage for The Great British Bake Off Musical and asking a variation of “Really?  A musical of Bake Off, how?” and I have to admit I shared this same confusion…That is until I watched it and what can I say, it just works!

The Great British Bake Off Musical has managed to pitch the writing on a knife edge, with tongue-in-cheek humour and chockfull of nods to Bake Off past contestants, presenters and storylines, yet somehow the show still feels new.  It should be cliched and as sickeningly sweet as the cakes on the show yet the writing is just in the right place to make this show really enjoyable.  The Great British Bake off is famous for its lack of drama so trying to create a compelling narrative here was always going to be tough, but they managed to make it work even if it’s not a storyline for the ages.  I don’t want to give much away but the main character arc in the show is somewhat predictable in places however if you’re an avid Bake Off watcher this isn’t going to be surprising, familiarity is the key to its success.

The Judges Pam Lee and Phil Hollinghurst guide the show and the performers portray their TV counterparts with fantastic realism.  It’s laugh-out-loud funny at times and the humour often verges on the surreal, from life-size boxing scones to amazing choreographed dough needing!  The boy band-inspired The Handshake Song is also a highlight and shout out to the props team who really go above and beyond on this musical.  The show even has its own cake designer!

This isn’t going to be a groundbreaking show by any means but in its cosy familiarity and humour, it’s sure to charm audiences as much as the TV show.  The Great British Bake Off Musical is on until May 13th and tickets start from £18 from the London Theatre Direct website.
