Day Trips From London: Exploring Windsor

Windsor is so close to London that people often talk about it as if it’s a suburb of the city, but this historic town is very much its own place.  Its gorgeous waterways, amazing architecture and traditional British ways makes it a stop on most tourist trips to the UK.  Even though it isn’t technically London it is included in my favourite London Walks book so it seemed like the perfect excuse to leave London behind for a day and go exploring Windsor!

Windsor really does feel like you are in a rural town and the castle is straight out of a fairytale!  This was my first visit to Windsor and it really blew me away, we are a country with a lot of castles but I have to believe this is the one that you are most likely to conjure up if you were envisioning a typical castle, it’s gorgeous and even had the coach and white horses outside, come through Cinderella vibes!  It’s a castle that is still in use by the royal family, so keep your eyes peeled to see if the flag is flying, that means the Queen is in residence!  I’d love to do a tour of the castle one day the interiors look stunning! 

The rest of the town has a York like feel to it, with its cobbled streets and ancient buildings it is quintessentially English.  It’s got some really unusual history two,  this unique blue postbox was put in to commemorate the first ever piece of airmail which was sent from this location to London in 1911.  It’s these little unique features which I find really endearing.

Walking along the river from Windsor you can head and into the village of Eaton, where you can get a really gorgeous view of the city and visit its main draw, the famous Eaton College boarding school.  The closer you get to the school the more you found yourself surrounded by high-end tailors, hat shops and the other such stores that have been around since the times of Dickens.  It is another world compared to the Northern state school I attended, you can spot the children wearing top hats and tails as they make their way to the college.  You might even see them playing unique outdoor games created at Eaton such as The Wall Game which is much more competitive then it may sound!
