Sister Act the Musical at the Eventim Apollo

Sister Act The Musical, now set in the present day, follows disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, whose world takes a drastic turn when she is witness to a murder.

Taken into witness protection and disguised as a nun, they’re sure no one will find this songster at a convent… or at least they hope so! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris makes an unexpected bond with her sisters through music. Whilst she helps them find their voices, she rediscovers her own.

Sister Act the Musical has hit London with its impressive all-star cast to bring joy to audiences during its short run this Summer, but does it hit the mark?  The famous 1992 film is brought to the stage here with its most famous songs stripped out in favour of a new, upbeat and fun score that doesn’t quite hit the heights of the film but is just as joyous to behold.

The strengths of the performance is in its comedic moments and strong cast, especially Jennifer Saunders who excels in her solo scene in the second act.  Beverly Knights’ voice is as incredible to hear as always and she pulls a great performance although possible not her best.  The slapstick comedy scenes near the end of the performance really lift the energy and helped drive the show home.

Sadly the short run of this performance is evident in other areas, the staging and direction are pretty basic for such a big stage show and feels rushed at times and this stops the show from really becoming the spectacle it is aiming to be

Sister Act The Musical is high camp, kitsch and fun but a little basic, and it’s possible to overlook that if you a fan of the original film.  Sister Act The Musical is on at the Eventim Apollo until the 28th of August, tickets start from £26 and can be booked through the London Box Office website.
