Murder for Two at the Other Palace

If I’ve learnt one thing in 2019 it’s that I don’t hate musical theatre like I’ve always told myself I do!  With shows like Hamelton, Heathers and Eugenius making their way into my heart this year it might be time to admit that my love of theatre isn’t just limited to plays.  It seems fitting therefore that my last theatre review of 2018 turned out to be one of my favourite musicals of the year!

Murder for Two is a classic ‘who done it’ murder mystery noir entirely performed by two actors with the aid of just one piano and a whole lot of energy!  Ed MacArthur plays Officer Marcus and Jeremy Legat does a mesmerising performance playing….well everyone else!  Every suspect in the play is performed by Legat often at breakneck speed and he is totally captivating. 

Both the dialogue and music in this wonderful two-man show is so beautifully written it’s hard to find faulty.  The pacing builds throughout and above all this show is utterly hilarious.  I can’t remember the last time I saw a show where I genuinely had a smile on my face the whole way through and laughed out loud so many times.  It plays into the classic murder mystery tropes in a new way that is genuinely surprising and hilarious.  

An extra point of credit should be given to the set design, despite its petite size it is wonderfully detailed and really helps set the tone.  All the elements come together to make an amazing show that is a much see.  Catch this before it’s inevitable transfer, this has the potential to become West End staple!
