It’s the ultimate festive musical. It was one of the best-loved Xmas movies… ever. Now it’s back, in the capital, at the Dominion Theatre, and it’s hot stuff! The story? When singers Bob Wallace, originally played by Bing Crosby, and Phil Davis, originally played by Danny Kaye, get home from the in the Second World War, they’re raring to get back to work. They join singing sisters Betty and Judy Haynes to create a Christmas stage show in rural Vermont, USA, at an inn owned by their ex-commander, General Waverly, who is in financial trouble. The show absolutely has to succeed, since Waverley’s future depends on it. The singers’ amazing efforts save the day, but it’s the music that’s the real star of this show.
White Christmas is a classic, well-loved festive musical, and for good reason. The live version currently playing at the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End doesn’t stray too much from the story and feel of the cinematic version, and this is what makes this Christmas show such a hit! It’s a picture-perfect representation of Christmas and sometimes, that’s just what you need!
This show is pure, vintage escapism at its best. It can get even the biggest humbug’s in your life into the Christmas spirit as it cycles through the classics including Blue Skies, Sisters and of course, White Christmas! It’s a classic, big band style musical with showstopping dances to match, which makes it hard to leave without a smile on your face. Its film-like visuals make it hard not to fall for as you let this classic musical envelope you in its cosy embrace.
This dreamy romance has something for the whole family and with its Americana and nostalgia-filled storyline it just can’t be beaten. It might not be breaking any new ground here but it is simple, festive, feel-good fun.
White Christmas is on at the Dominion Theatre until the 4th of January, tickets start from £25 and can be booked directly through the Dominion website.
