Sussex Travel Wish List

July 22, 2020

Carrying on from my Kent Travel wish list I am turning my attention to the next county on my list, Sussex.  Whilst we get used to this new ‘normal’ of staycations I am keen to see as much of my country as possible so I think this is going to become a bit of a series, I am discovering so many beautiful and interesting places in the UK already that I wasn’t aware of!  So without further adieu here is my Sussex travel wish list:

The Mermaid Inn in Rye

Rye

Rye is a stunning small town which has been high on my ‘to visit’ list for a while now.  It’s cobbled streets and historic homes make me want to move there before I’ve even made my first visit!  The whole town is stunningly insta-worthy and a real chance of pace from city life.

Distance from London: Approximately 2 hours 15 by car or an hour by train

Winchelsea and Camber Castle

The town of Winchelsea is just south of Rye and is set above one of the finest beaches of the South Coast.  This Medieval town still has many of its original features and you can even tour some of the medical cellars underneath the buildings.  Camber Castle in Winchelsea is a must-visit for me.

Distance from London:  Approximately 2 hours by car or 1 hour 30 by train.

Bodium Castle and Great Dixter

Imagine a castle in a fairytale story, this is what Bodium Castle looks like.  A bridge extending over a wide moat to a stone turreted castle, it was even involved in the War of the Roses!  Great Dixter is just down the road from here, it’s a 15th-century manor house with gorgeous gardens.

Distance from London: Approximately 1 hour 15 by car

Eastbourne

Can you believe all this time I’ve lived in London and I am yet to visit Eastbourne?  As well as the beach and promenade to explore there’s also the Seven Sisters Country Park which has fantastic views of the ocean.

Distance from London: Approximately 1 hour 20 by car or 1 hour 30 by train

Houses of Lewes, a must see in Sussex travel

Image thanks to Jo of Tea and Cake for the Soul

Lewes

The ancient and historic town of Lewes has many amazing attractions, including Lewes Castle, Ann of Cleves House and Monk’s House.  Its yearly celebration for Guy Fawks night is legendary.

Distance from London: Approximately 1 hour 50 by car or 1 hour by train

Arundel Castle

Are you surprised there are so many beautiful castles in one county?  I sure am!  This Castle sits on top of a hill overlooking a river and is a truly impressive structure both in size and its history.  It was built at the end of the 11th century and inside you can expect to find all the luxury you would expect from such an amazing castle.

Distance from London: Approximately 1 hour 50 by car or 1 hour 45 my train.

The Long Man of Wilmington

These ancient chalk drawings are well known in the UK and I’ve not yet had the chance to see one with my own eyes.  Some say this figure of a man cut into the hillside goes back as far as the stone age!

Distance from London: Approximately 2 hours by car or 3 hours 10 by train

Hastings

Hastings is known by most of us Brits as being the site of the Battle of Hastings which we are all taught about in school, but there is more to this seaside town then just this famous battle.  There’s Hastings Castle, built by William the Conqueror, Smuggler’s Adventure which tells the story of 18th-century smugglers and of course Battle Abbey.

distance from London: 2 hours by car or 1 hour 30 by train

So that’s it for my Sussex travel wish list.  Two places you might have noticed that are missing from this post are Ashdown Forest and Brighton, this is only because I have already visited, and loved both locations.  Ashdown Forst is known for it’s Winnie the Pooh connection so check out my post on visiting Pooh Corner and Pooh Stick Bridge if you want to learn more.  Are there any on your Sussex travel list that I’ve missed?  Let me know in the comments.

Although I’ve been living in the UK for five years now, I never found the chance to explore Sussex. Thank you for creating this list of places! I have already added Rye and Arundel Castle on my list.

Dissapointed in myself that I lived in London for two years and never made it down to this area at all. Noted for next time I make it down there – thank you for sharing!
